Why I Teach Rhythm Before Strumming
One of the biggest challenges when teaching ukulele strumming is that students are often trying to learn too many things at once.
They are learning how to hold the ukulele, where to place their fingers, how to keep a steady beat, how to change chords, and how to move their strumming hand correctly. When all of those skills are introduced together, strumming patterns can quickly become overwhelming.
That is why I prefer to teach rhythm before strumming.
Before we ever play a strumming pattern on the ukulele, we spend time reading and performing rhythms away from the instrument. We use rhythm cards, body percussion, rhythm echo activities, and egg shakers to practice quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests.
Once students understand how a rhythm sounds and feels, transferring that rhythm to the ukulele becomes much easier.
Instead of memorizing random up and down arrows, students begin to understand the musical meaning behind each movement. They can see the rhythm, hear the rhythm, and perform the rhythm before adding the challenge of playing the instrument.

Connecting Rhythm Reading to Ukulele Strumming
One reason I created this game is that many strumming resources rely only on arrows to show movement.
While arrows can be helpful, they do not always show students how the rhythm is organized. Beginners often know which direction to move their hand, but they are not always sure when those movements should happen.
To make strumming patterns more visual, each card in the game combines rhythm notation with color-coded strumming directions.
Quarter notes are paired with green down-strum arrows.
Eighth notes are paired with a green down-strum and a red up-strum.
Quarter rests are paired with a yellow mute symbol that reminds students to hit or mute the strings.
This visual system helps students connect what they see on the page with what they need to do physically on the instrument.
Rather than thinking of strumming as a series of random hand movements, students begin to understand that every strum is connected to a rhythm pattern.
For visual learners especially, the color coding makes it much easier to recognize down strums, up strums, and rests at a glance.
How I Use the Ukulele Strumming Pattern Game in Class
I typically use this game after students have already been introduced to basic strumming patterns.
Before we play, we spend time working with rhythm cards. We read quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests, practice rhythm echoes, and create our own rhythm combinations using cards. Sometimes we use egg shakers or body percussion before transferring those same patterns to the ukulele.
Once students are comfortable reading and performing the rhythms, the board game becomes a fun way to review and reinforce those skills.
Students play in small groups of about five or six players. Each student chooses a game piece, rolls a die, and moves along the board. When they land on a space, they draw a strumming pattern card and perform the pattern.
Depending on the level of the group, students can:
Read the rhythm only
Perform the pattern with body percussion
Play it on open strings
Play it using chords
Add a chord challenge using the chord die
The chord die includes beginner-friendly chords such as C, Am, F, and G.
Level 1
Level 1 focuses on beginner-friendly patterns using:
Quarter notes
Eighth-note pairs
Quarter rests
This level helps students develop steady beat, coordination, and confidence with basic down and up strums.
Level 2
Level 2 introduces more complex patterns that include additional rhythmic combinations and greater coordination challenges.
I usually introduce these cards after students feel successful with the Level 1 patterns.
One thing I love about this game is that it grows with the students. You can begin with just a handful of simple cards and gradually add more challenging patterns as students gain confidence.
