data-end=\"1103\">rhythm chants<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1oo4rts\" data-start=\"1104\" data-end=\"1127\">movement activities<\/li><li data-section-id=\"153jxmz\" data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1139\">scarves<\/li><li data-section-id=\"kawmhj\" data-start=\"1140\" data-end=\"1153\">bean bags<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1uxydco\" data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1169\">egg shakers<\/li><li data-section-id=\"2nfzxd\" data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1189\">body percussion<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1upsyeq\" data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1207\">echo patterns<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1346\">I use rhythmic chants inspired by the approach of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Edwin Gordon<\/span><\/span> to help students feel pulse and meter internally.<\/p><p data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1449\">Because of this, students begin understanding rhythm physically before applying it to the instrument.<\/p><p data-start=\"1451\" data-end=\"1467\">First they move.<\/p><p data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1496\">Then they speak the rhythm.<\/p><p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1554\">After that, they transfer those patterns to the ukulele.<\/p><p data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1605\">This creates a much stronger rhythmic foundation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d6c122 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5d6c122\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7fa499 elementor-widget note<\/li><li data-section-id=\"119dmin\" data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1803\">paired eighth notes<\/li><li data-section-id=\"12d6nik\" data-start=\"1804\" data-end=\"1820\">quarter rest<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"1903\">These three symbols are enough to create many beginner strumming patterns in 4\/4.<\/p><p data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"1940\">First, I show each symbol visually.<\/p><p data-start=\"1942\" data-end=\"1977\">Then I explain how each one sounds.<\/p><p data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2029\">After that, we complete simple activities such as:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2081\"><li data-section-id=\"5xozzg\" data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2042\">tracing<\/li><li data-section-id=\"avn5bc\" data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2054\">drawing<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1q02d3e\" data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2065\">naming<\/li><li data-section-id=\"x6sp8s\" data-start=\"2066\" data-end=\"2081\">identifying<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2083\" data-end=\"2169\">As a result, students become familiar with the symbols before using them in songs.<\/p><p data-start=\"5559\" data-end=\"5588\">First, students learn chords.<\/p><p data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5634\">Then they play songs using only down strums.<\/p><p data-start=\"5636\" data-end=\"5665\">This allows them to focus on:<\/p><ul data-start=\"5667\" data-end=\"5712\"><li data-section-id=\"1uh09pr\" data-start=\"5667\" data-end=\"5684\">chord changes<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1o6y3ua\" data-start=\"5685\" data-end=\"5702\">hand position<\/li><li data-section-id=\"m47i53\" data-start=\"5703\" data-end=\"5712\">pulse<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"5714\" data-end=\"5763\">without the extra challenge of complex strumming.<\/p><p data-start=\"5765\" data-end=\"5836\">After that, once they feel comfortable, I introduce strumming patterns.<\/p><p data-start=\"5838\" data-end=\"5886\">As a result, students feel much less frustrated.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1724b2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b1724b2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-075f8ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"075f8ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Add Strumming to Songs Later<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b081d6 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1b081d6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb343f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cb343f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5926\" data-end=\"5944\">Once students can:<\/p><p data-start=\"5946\" data-end=\"6034\">\u2714 change chords comfortably<br data-start=\"5973\" data-end=\"5976\" \/>\u2714 recognize patterns<br data-start=\"5996\" data-end=\"5999\" \/>\u2714 perform strumming independently<\/p><p data-start=\"6036\" data-end=\"6076\">then we begin adding strumming to songs.<\/p><p data-start=\"6078\" data-end=\"6161\">At this stage, many students can play the pattern but cannot sing at the same time.<\/p><p data-start=\"6163\" data-end=\"6189\">That is completely normal.<\/p><p data-start=\"6191\" data-end=\"6242\">Therefore, I usually tell students not to sing yet.<\/p><p data-start=\"6244\" data-end=\"6252\">Instead:<\/p><ul data-start=\"6254\" data-end=\"6332\"><li data-section-id=\"c7u7ad\" data-start=\"6254\" data-end=\"6285\">think the melody internally<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1dlx0c7\" data-start=\"6286\" data-end=\"6305\">focus on rhythm<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1ipu5c0\" data-start=\"6306\" data-end=\"6332\">count strums per chord<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6334\" data-end=\"6408\">After that, once strumming becomes automatic, singing becomes much easier.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-870cd97 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"870cd97\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Final data-start=\"6556\" data-end=\"6624\"><li data-section-id=\"1683lt7\" data-start=\"6556\" data-end=\"6563\">age<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1u9y6d2\" data-start=\"6564\" data-end=\"6583\">practice habits<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1cgkbt3\" data-start=\"6584\" data-end=\"6600\">coordination<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1ig3g4n\" data-start=\"6601\" data-end=\"6624\">previous experience<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6626\" data-end=\"6690\">Because of this, it is important to respect each student\u2019s pace.<\/p><p data-start=\"6692\" data-end=\"6776\">When rhythm is introduced gradually, students become more confident and independent.<\/p><p data-start=\"6778\" data-end=\"6820\">As a result, they enjoy playing much
