I usually teach ukulele in small groups of up to five students.
Because of that, I need a structure that keeps everyone engaged at the same time.<\/p>

1. Movement & Warm-Up<\/h3>

First, we start away from the instrument.<\/p>

For example, we use scarves, rhythm sticks, or movement props to explore:<\/p>

  • tonal patterns<\/li>
  • rhythm patterns<\/li>
  • different meters<\/li><\/ul>

    This step is essential because it prepares the ear and the body before playing.<\/p>

    2. Instrument Time<\/h3>

    After that, we move to the ukulele.<\/p>

    We tune together, check posture, and focus on one main objective for the lesson.
    In general, I choose either chords OR strumming\u2014never both at once.<\/p>

    3. Focused Teaching<\/h3>

    Next, I connect everything to a song.<\/p>

    For instance, if the song uses C, F, and G, those are the chords we learn.<\/p>

    While I listen to each student individually:<\/p>

    • some students practice quietly<\/li>
    • others complete simple worksheets or chord diagrams<\/li><\/ul>

      This way, everyone stays engaged while I give individual feedback.<\/p>

      4. Games as Reinforcement<\/h3>

      Finally, we play a game.<\/p>

      This is where the magic happens.<\/p>

      Instead of more repetition, students reinforce what they learned through play.
